Satellite Phone Service and What It’s Used For

4:00 Minute Read

Spectrum is dedicated to keeping you connected, whether you're at home, at work or on the move. Through our satellite messaging service on Spectrum Mobile®, you can communicate with loved ones almost anywhere on the planet. Using orbiting satellites to send messages, this technology is invaluable and used in remote areas, emergencies and situations where traditional networks are unavailable.

How Satellite Phone Connectivity Works

Satellite phone service sends your calls and texts via the satellites orbiting Earth rather than relying on nearby towers. Your device sends data to the nearest satellite, which relays to a ground station. From there, your conversation or message reaches the recipient through standard networks. This allows you to send messages in more isolated areas, since the satellite that phones are dependent on signal from the sky rather than towers on the ground.

With Spectrum Mobile, you can use satellite coverage with several newer Google and Samsung devices including the Google Pixel 9 (and higher) and the Galaxy S25 Series. Apple devices, beginning with the iPhone 14 series, provide users with satellite service with similar messaging capabilities.

Satellite Cell Service Benefits and Advantages

Because satellite systems use line-of-sight to the sky, they deliver service where conventional coverage maps end. As satellites move, they hand off your session seamlessly, while specialized antennas and secure ground stations work together for dependable voice, messaging and emergency features.

The major benefit of satellite phone service is being able to use it at any time, any place. This reliability is what sets satellite communication apart. When local infrastructure fails or doesn't exist, satellite service keeps you connected. Satellite phones are often used by hikers checking in from the backcountry, maritime crews coordinating at sea, remote teams managing operations and families reaching loved ones during storms. When networks are congested during emergencies, satellite becomes a resilient option for updates, coordination and calls for help.

How To Use Satellite Connectivity with Spectrum Mobile

Using satellite connectivity services is simple. On a supported device, a prompt to connect via satellite will appear upon entering a cell service dead zone. From there, you'll receive on-screen guidance to aim your device at the sky with as clear a view as possible until a connection has been established. Once you are connected, you can use your mobile phone to send a text message to emergency services or, on Apple devices, to other numbers or contacts.

If the connection with the satellite is disrupted, your device will prompt you to reconnect, but if a message has been successfully transmitted, this will not delay receipt.

Selecting the Right Satellite Solution for Your Individual Needs

By selecting a Spectrum Mobile device with satellite connectivity, you can avoid more dead zones and additional worrying in crisis situations. While there are other providers who offer standalone devices that allow for calls by satellite, these services can be costly and require a purpose-built satellite phone to connect, further adding to the cost. Satellite can be included with your Spectrum Mobile phone, depending on your situation, so you are covered when you need it most.

We are committed to providing quality service to our customers no matter where you go, and we know the ability to send text messages over satellite will provide the support and peace of mind needed in an emergency. For more device-specific information, check out our satellite service support articles.
